Presentation Topic Details

Educator Appreciation; A Call for Celebration! is a keynote presentation that honors, appreciates and celebrates the educator. Much is asked of educators today and thus many within the education profession feel overwhelmed and under-appreciated. Participants will be drawn into an opportunity to celebrate their vocation as a “calling” to serve young minds and hearts, but
also to celebrate themselves as the very people who answered that call. This presentation is designed to empower the participants, who will walk away with reminders of personal and professional purpose, as well as strategies for self-care and collegiality and student connection.

Start with the Heart; Igniting Hope in Schools through Social and Emotional Learning! will engage the audience in a desire to create an atmosphere within the school community that emphasizes a philosophy based on social, emotional and academic development (SEAD). This workshop or keynote presentation is specifically designed to introduce the five competencies of social, emotional and academic development through the lens of a foundational framework for the adults, as well as the pupils, within the school community.  Participants will understand the meaning and importance of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relational skills and responsible decision making through the lens of “starting with the heart”.  Following this presentation, participants will be able to apply social and emotional competency concepts and strategies to their own lives, as well as in their various roles as educators.  (Start with the Heart; Igniting Hope in Schools through Social and Emotional Learning is Michelle’s new book based on this presentation.  It is scheduled for release by Corwin in March, 2019)

Start with the Heart; Creating a Positive School Climate by Meeting Students (and Adults!) Right Where They Are! is a keynote presentation or workshop intended to help educators to increase awareness of the stories behind our students and colleagues. Through heartrending anecdotes, current research and reflection opportunities, the audience will recognize the various experiences that our students and colleagues may be carrying in their invisible backpacks.
Educators will become cognizant of educator behaviors that are based on a Human Mindframe and a Start with the Heart Hierarchy of Needs that will enable all participants to meet others right where they are. Finally, attendees will walk away with strategies for connecting with and making a positive difference in all members of the school community, thus improving the
climate of the school overall.

The Invisible Backpack: “Seeing” the Human Being Behind the Behavior is an engaging workshop designed to remind participants that students and colleagues may be carrying a heavy load in their invisible backpacks. This training is intended to help participants to increase awareness of the stories and experiences that students and colleagues bring into school with them
every day. Educators will engage in activities and strategies to help them to reflect on their own lives and to empathize and connect with each other and those with whom they interact every day. Finally, participants will walk away with strategies to incorporate identity equity and restorative practices into their daily vocations in order to meet people right where they are and to encourage them to know that anything is possible!

Conscientious Connection; The Power of Relationship is a keynote presentation or workshop in which participants will learn seven “Keys of Connection” with which to build relationships. Participants will understand that if we, as human beings, can be intentional in our efforts to connect with others, then we will be better able to build relationships based on kindness, trust,
respect and service. As a result, educators will be empowered to build relationships with their colleagues, students and parents/guardians through intentional connection that will foster a positive school climate, a proactive approach to discipline and an atmosphere of productive collaboration. Additional outcomes will include the ability for participants to understand the
importance of social and emotional learning competencies through the lens of connection and to apply practical strategies for making authentic connections with all stakeholders within the school community and beyond.

Participants will understand the meaning and importance of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relational skills and responsible decision making through the lens of “starting with the heart” with a human mindset. Following this presentation, participants will be able to apply social and emotional competency concepts and strategies to their own lives, as well as in
their various roles as educators. (Start with the Heart; Igniting Hope in Schools through Social and Emotional Learning is Michelle’s new book based on this presentation.)

Start with the Heart; Creating a Positive School Climate through Restorative Practices is a keynote presentation or workshop for administrators, school counselors, social workers, teachers and support staff that presents restorative practice as a way of being which begins with a human mindset, connection and empathy. Strategies based on high support, high expectations and high accountability are offered with a rationale and practicality that will engage and empower participants. A multi-tiered systems of support model for restorative practices will be introduced, and participants will engage in activities in which they will experience putting practice into action, at each level. Educators will leave this workshop understanding restorative practices and excited to integrate such practice into the culture of their schools.

Themed Retreat is a one or two-day opportunity that can be customized to meet the needs of specific school groups: teachers/school staff, leadership teams, cabinet or board members, or student groups.  Each retreat is built with the unique needs of the participants considered. Trust-building, team-building, problem-solving and brainstorming activities are all common means used throughout the retreat to achieve the outcome goals of the school district.

* Note: All topics can be presented as a Keynote Presentation or Professional Development Training/Workshop. Following a presentation, workshop or retreat, additional days can be provided and customized for follow-up professional development, coaching or repeat presentation to serve as continuity of message to be presented to an additional group, i.e.: Students, parents or district leadership (including School Boards upon request).
